'At times of frustation and difficulties I like to do Japa and then I experiance peace in my mind', says Karna Hamal a regular visitor of the Naamhat Boxtel. He says, ' when I chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra, I feel that my problems are insignificant ones and won't devastate my life;. This realization is indeed the begining of self realization- that one need to purify and spiritualize ones' existence by reciting the Holy name; the dharma of this modern age of quarrel, the kali yuga.
In my line of duty at the Home Ministry, I met Karna Hamal few years ago going back to his camp after his asylum hearing. Knowing by appearance that he is a Nepali, I spoke with him and inquired if he likes to visit a temple. He agreed and came to Naamhat Boxtel together. Getting along for few days gave the understanding that among the millions of Nepalese spread all over the world, Karna appeared to me terribly simple person. So simple that he can't express his own problems in good articulation of words. For me its a rare to have seen a Nepali so simple as an autistic person.
Karna Hamal |
The first day of his stay in the Naamhat mandir was a simple observation that he could very easily acquient himself with interest. Nobody is forced to chant the name of the supreme absolute here and its own free will choice to pick up what the best is in this human form of life to do.Hamal saw we all at home, including the chlidren chant Hare Krishna mahamantra in a japa beeds bag. Without any hasitation and reserve, that all most every Nepalese does show up with, he asked for a japa mala. I prayed to the lord Sri Krishna that he become a pure devotee, offered that mala to the Lords lotus feet and handed over to Hamal. He began chanting. I asked him to increase the rounds and just begin with two rounds per day. He agreed and said recently that he did not fail in that recourse.
Life's problems does not have material solution nor a shortcut remidy. Hamal had a terrible road accident and had near- death experiance. His head was broken. He is suffering from ceberal haematone. His expression abilities are little bit withdrawn. This happened when his asylum was rejected. He asks; ' does with holding the God's name help solve my problems?' Of course yes, I think. Everything has a reason behind it and the most terrible happenings like that in life has some link with the action of the past. We are always under cotroll, the supreme controller if being approached can result to lessened reaction. If that accident was occured in Nepal Hamal would not live any more. Chanting helped him with the spiritual force to live although with difficulties. Hamal's second asylum was also rejected in the last week of February and was thrown on the Dutch cold street.
I incidentially saw him lying on a bus stop stoel and brought him to the Naamhat Dhaam. His health was deteriorated. He has court case fight in the Dutch court Rotterdam on 8th March and the chances appears still not much to have permission to have a second life in Holland. Back home in Nepal he has sons and daughters and beautiful wife who indeed want to see him soon. He showed news papers where abduction of his son was covered. If his faith was not strong on Hare Krishna mahamantra, at times of such difficulties one would have stopped and gone mad like an atheist. But Hamal continues chanting and says its now the only source of happliness that he could derive out by chanting the holy name.
Many Ndepalese including Bhutanese were always invited in the Vedic cultural programs and non turn out due to the influence of their leaders or due to busy life of money earning.Yet those who did came to attend has little or no inclination to chant the holy name. One day a Bhutanese refugee brahman accepted my invitation to this monthly cultural program in which discourses on Bhagavad Gita was organised including chanting the holy name, this brahman was severly closing his mouth and ears. Although he is a doctor by profession, the science of Krishna consciousness was dried in his intelligence. The arguement he used in one incident was that one should eat at least eggs because, according to his arguments, eggs contain a huge amount of vitamine and biotine, which amount one can get, only if one eats ten kilos of vegetables. So, he said; 'its better to eat one egg a day than to eat ten kilos of vegetable to get required energy'. The Vedic wisdom opposes such dry philosophy- see Bhagavad Gita chanpter 13 about the food in the mode of ignorance. More over an egg is synomien to mensturation and thus one can imagine what level of intelligence and humanity one may have among those consuming mensturation?
Hamal appreciates the idea of vegetarianism and provided that he get the association of devotees he will be a nice devotee of the Lord. Please pray for Karan Hamal's sucess in the Dutch court. Hamal is seeking some one to acompany him to the court as the court also suggested him to avail a speaker in his favour but yet non could be found although there are thousands of Nepalese in Holland. This suggests that men come forward as friends only when everything goes well but for those who owe no one, the God would be there for him. gautam
