Ons dienst op de krant Selissen

Selissenwal kent een kleurrijke bevolking. Vanuit alle windstreken zijn mensen in de Boxtelse wijk neergestreken. Een van die mensen die zich in de afgelopen jaren hier een plaats heeft verworven is Nanda Gautam met zijn gezin.

In 1999 kwam Nanda Gautam als een gevluchte journalist vanuit het koninkrijk Buthan naar Nederland. Drie jaar later kon hij zich herenigen met zijn vrouw en dochtertje. Hij werkt op Sint Lucas als docent video en als werkplekbegeleider. Om hier een plek te veroveren bedacht Nanda destijds iets praktisch. Hij en zijn vrouw Chandra begonnen elke derde zaterdag van de maand hun huis open te stellen voor mensen. Om samen te koken en te eten. Met koken beginnen Nanda en Chandra zaterdagochtend vroeg om 8 uur. Vanaf ongeveer 10 uur komen de gasten binnen, die onder hun leiding Buthaanse gerechten gaan koken. Halverwege de middag begint om vier uur de maaltijd. Iedereen mag zelf ook een bepaalde groente meenemen.

Contact en integreren via koken
Nanda Gautam: ‘Ik wilde destijds in 2002 contact maken met de mensen. Ik wilde integreren. Hoe doe je dat? Mij leek een goede manier om samen te koken en te eten.’ Nanda Gautam legt uit wat de essentie is van de Buthaanse keuken. ‘De gerechten zijn altijd vegetarisch. Wij Buthanen eten geen vlees, vis, of eieren. Wij drinken wel melk en gebruiken yoghurt en kaas bij gerechten.’ De maaltijd bestaat in de eerste plaats uit (rode) rijst met daarbij allerlei groentegerechten. De smaak van het eten is bepaald ‘pittig’ te noemen. In de recepten spelen Spaanse pepers een hoofdrol. Heel belangrijk zijn de specifieke kruiden die in de Himalaya groeien. In Eindhoven is gelukkig een winkel waar deze kruiden zijn te verkrijgen.

Tafelgesprekken
Minstens zo belangrijk vindt Nanda Gautam de gesprekken aan tafel. Hij vindt dat het moet gaan over onderwerpen die bijdragen aan een betere wereld. Hij schuwt moeilijke onderwerpen niet. Hij is zelf Hindoe, maar zijn huis en zijn hart staan open voor alle geloven. Gautam: ‘Ik kijk niet naar huidskleur, afkomst of geloof. Bij ons is iedereen welkom. Als wij ons als mensen verbonden voelen, zijn wij één familie en dat is beter voor de vrede in de wereld.’ Nanda Gautam is ook erg begaan met het milieu. Aan de orde komen vraagstukken als: Wat zit er fout in de massaproductie? Hoe beschermen wij ons dierenwelzijn in de veehouderij? Hoe kunnen wij het beste onze kinderen opvoeden? Zelf leeft Nanda Gautam vanuit zijn geloof. Richtsnoer is voor hem te leven vanuit het Heilige boek Bhagavat Gita, te vergelijken met de Bijbel of de Koran. Hij ziet in elk mens een ziel waarin het goddelijke zit. Vegetarisme help men zich hogere bewustzijn te ontwikkelen.
