Mensen kunnen aan elkaar tonen dat ze heel aardig en vriendelijk zijn, en dat is goed. Hoe aardig en welwillend we zijn naar elkaar vanuit ons hart is te zien tijdens moeilijkheden van anderen. Er is een verschil tussen uiterlijke genegenheid en liefde vanuit het hart. Uiterlijke genegenheid, onder meer enkele zakelijke rituelen, kunnen commercieel bedoeld zijn, maar het warme gevoel vanuit het hart is inderdaad de zuivere liefde. Deze liefde wordt in de Bhagavad Gita omschreven als ‘su hrid, su hridam’ en Sri Krishna raadt ons aan deze kwaliteiten te ontwikkelen want ‘su hridam’ staat boven het zogenaamde ‘aardig, lief, genegenheid en vriendelijke’ gedrag. Liefde van Sri Krishna is ‘su hrd’ zoals verteld in de Bhagavad Gita 5.29, en is een weldoener voor alle wezens. Dit wordt verder uitgelegd in de Bhagavatam 11.13.40, hier wordt gezegd dat mensen met deze kwaliteiten worden gevestigd in de schuilplaats van Heer Krishna. The word “devotee” referred to someone who was living in a temple and engaged in temple activities full time. Those who lived outside were referred to as “karmis”. That early phase of ISKCON was probably unavoidable. Srila Prabhupada had just started the movement in the West where practically no one had any idea about Krishna Consciousness or devotional service. Therefore, such commitment and involvement was essential. Changing Times With the passing of time, the outlook changed – the attitude of the movement broadened and those who were unable to become fully involved for various reasons were also included.
